Green Card Environmental Training

Save the world with your iPhone

Happy New Year! I hope you all had a very green Christmas and my best wishes for your happiness, health and smaller carbon footprint in 2010 :-) After the debacle in Copenhagen I've been looking for ways to involve everyone in green on the ground action as we obviously cannot rely on our politicians.

One of the simplest and most fun ways to get involved is with your iPhone!

Check out these fabulously green iPhone applications:

Bliss Trek

Learn how to drive more efficiently with this on the go eco driving application. It tracks your speed on the move and gives you immediate feedback to save on fuel. At just 99 cents you should earn back your investment in no time at all! Try Green Gas Saver for a free version of the same idea.

GoodGuide

While not yet available in Australia, this is definitely an iPhone app to keep an eye on. This app allows you to scan product barcodes from hundreds of different stores to find out the green credentials of the product you're buying. Putting your dollars towards greener products is one of the best things you can do for the environment.

Whole Foods Market Recipes

Cook organically with these scrumptious vegetarian and vegan recipes from Whole Foods. You can target a special diet like 'gluten free' and this app will even generate your weekly shopping list for you!

Mission Zero

Keep informed with live news feeds of sustainability issues from all around the world.

Green Card

Well we have to love the name! Sadly not our app but a great idea none the less. The Green Card app allows you to send digital business cards via your iphone so you can avoid the huge carbon cost associated with printing out regular business cards.

Clear Standards Carbon Tracker

This app helps you keep track of and monitor your personal carbon emissions. Stick your new years resolution out to the end with the help of this great free app.

Kindle for the iPhone

Read books and save trees with Amazon's Kindle for the iPhone.

NASA's chemical sniffer

NASA has invented a chemical sniffer attachment for the iPhone... The prototype chemical sensor can sniff small amounts of chemicals like methane, ammonia, and chlorine gas. Click here to read more.

While the US market has exploded with apps to locate recycling venues, green restaurants, green businesses and green products the directories in Australia aren't quite up to scratch yet, but check back here in a few months. With the Christmas explosion in iPhone ownership there's bound to be some great new apps just around the corner.

And of course don't forget you can use your iPhone to call your local politician and find out what they're doing about climate change.
